The North is the future. It’s rough and tumble, get ‘er done, good enough and sometimes perfect. Look at this clip of how the Dawson City ferry docks on both sides of the Yukon River. (The link is above and may not upload—spotty internet.)
There is no way to build a bridge here, at least no practical way that wouldn’t break the bank. Anyway, it wouldn’t last. The current! There’s no way to even build a dock here! So, the ferry comes in and just sort of rams into the dirt on the shore. It works. They do this about 45 times per shift, 24/7. When the dirt bank they run into to dock the ferry erodes, they add more dirt.
This is the spirit we can use to live in this moment.
The so called standards we have for all kinds of things will soon be impractical. We need to think differently.
The internet is spotty? Figure it out. Maybe it will come back. Maybe the day will come when it doesn’t. You’d better know how to read a map and all that old school stuff.
No water? Figure it out. Yukon Territory campgrounds have no potable water. Guess what? You can figure that out.
You see what I’m saying. The North is all curiosity and ingenuity. I love it here. It’s the future. We will have to figure it out. Funny thing to say in Dawson City, which makes a living by selling the past to us tourists.
I want to write more about this and I will. But now, I’ve got some MacGuyver-ing to do in Dawson City.
